Adequate funding support from local appropriating bodies (city council & board of supervisors) is essential to developing and maintaining a quality public education program. Therefore, it is critical that local school boards and superintendents develop budget proposals that reflect the needs of the students and families their school divisions serve. On average, local appropriating bodies provide 45-55% of a school division's general operating budget funding; and nearly 100% of the school system's capital improvement funding. Therefore, it is essential that the school division's budget proposal and presentation to the local appropriating bodies clearly and concisely reflect the values and needs of the school division and the community that it serves. This presentation and discussion is designed to provide school board members with some of the key elements of an effective budget presentation to local appropriating bodies.
